De Anza Exhibit: Participation

This exhibit, framed by the idea of participation, focuses on the often painful combination of exclusion, or a sense of not being part of something, in the midst of participation. Being inside and outside at the same time might be horses in Kyrgyzstan who had been part of a collective farm and now roam free though unattended. It may be children living in a residential institution in Romania who do not have their own toothbrush. It may be homeless Ethiopians living under a poster of the Prime Minister that hails democracy but all they receive is the protection of the poster. At times, however, participation is satisfying such as a child living in a foster home in South Africa. Each of the potential photos in the exhibit is described below.
